Island Voices has put together a programme of some of the most lively, beautiful, complex and meaningful songs ever arranged for a cappella choir. This year’s spring concert is titled Songs of the People and includes folk songs from Africa, Spain, Canada, the U.S, Israel, the South Pacific, - in short, all over the world.

Some of the more remarkable pieces are: Gamelan, by R. Murray Schafer, which makes the choir sound like a chorus of excited bells; Eskimo Hunting Song, arranged by Derek Healey, which has the distinct flavour of a timeless, lonely wilderness setting; and Igraj Kolce, a Slovenian dance tune with a remarkable intensity. Balancing these are more familiar pieces like Danny Boy and Shenandoah. What will likely stay in the heads of singers and audience alike after the concert are the African pieces with their infectious rhythms and uplifting melodies.

The concert is presented with the assistance of Grandmothers to Grandmothers and part proceeds will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation

... from one of our fans after the Campbell River concert:
The concert tonight was just awesome. Michelle Weckesser is one accomplished and talented young lady! The complexity and variety of the program was outstanding. Shenandoah brought tears to the lady sitting next to me. That was one of my favourites, but I especially loved Matthew Nicoll's rendition of Coal Town Road, and the African pieces. Those beautiful bass harmonies give me shivers. Have a well deserved rest.
